Fakhrul, 6 other BNP leaders get bail

The High Court on Monday granted bail to seven BNP leaders, including its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and BNP joint secretary general Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, in separate cases.
The five other leaders are Mirza Abbas, Goyshwar Chandra Roy, Amanullah Aman, Abdus Salam and JCD leader Obaidul Haq Nasir.
Responding to separate petitions, an HC joint bench comprising Justice
Md Borhanduddin and Justice KM Kuamrul Kader passed the order.
Barrister Rafique-ul-Haque, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president AJ Mohammad Ali, its former president Joynul Abedin and Barrister AKM Ehsanur Rahman appeared for the BNP leaders.
Petitioners’ counsel Sagir Hossain Lion said Mirza Fakhrul secured eight-week ad-interim bail in a case filed on January 7 with Raman police station.
Meanwhile, on January 16, the High Court asked the police to refrain from harassing or arresting Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir until the submission of inquiry reports in three cases filed against him under the Explosives Substances Act with different police stations in the capital.
Police filed two cases – one on December 1 and the other on December 25 last year – with Ramna Police Station against Fakhrul on charge of ‘instigating blockaders to make petrol bomb attacks’ on vehicles during the blockade enforced by BNP-led 18-party alliance.
In the third case filed on November 28 last year, Shahbagh police made Fakhrul an accused on similar charge.
Besides, Mirza Abbas and Obaidul Haq Nasir secured an eight-week bail each in the four cases, Goyshwar Chandra Roy and Abdus Salm four-week each and Amanullah Aman got eight-week in four cases and four-week in five other cases.
