Extortion by ‘cops’ goes on in Sylhet

A section of law enforcers is engaged in extorting people, particularly passengers of CNG-run auto-rickshaws and slow-moving vehicles, in the Sylhet.
City commuters are worried as extortion by dishonest law enforcers is frequently taking place in different areas, including the entry and the exist points of the Sylhet City area.
Some crooked policemen are collecting illegal toll from the passengers by stopping their vehicles in the name of conducting search, many city people told.
Police conduct the ‘so-called’ search of people, mostly passengers of the auto-rickshaws, and slow-moving rickshaws from morning to midnight every day.
Sumon, owner of a roadside tea stall at Uposhor Road, said extortion by policemen are taking place in her area.

In most cases, dishonest policemen stop vehicles for no reasons, search the passengers and pick up them.
During a visit to some city areas, this correspondent came to know that local people fear a policeman more than a criminal.
Young people are afraid of boarding any rickshaw or auto-rickshaw at night as police stop most of the vehicles and in many cases, demand money from the passengers with a threat to arrest them, locals alleged.
Allegations have it that police drag their targets into their van if they fail to fulfill their demands, and release them only after getting money from the victims’ relatives.
They even seize their valuables and give back them in exchange for money, it is alleged.
Ali Hossain, driver of a battery-run auto-rickshaw at Railgate under Dakshin Surma police station, alleged that a police team stopped him near Northest Medical College Hospital around 9:00pm on Wednesday.
 “They are compelled me to give them Tk 200 with a threat to seize the unlicensed autorickshaw,” he alleged.
Some sub-inspectors and constables have long been carrying out misdeed in different areas in the Sylhet City. many alleged. Akther Hossain, a another roadside shop owner in Dorga gate Road area alleged collecting money from the commuters by law enforcers on the roads in his area is a regular phenomenon.
In some cases, dishonest policemen took people to secret places in their vehicles and after some time, they are freed soon in return for money, he added.
