Bangladesh’s exports rose by nine per cent in the first nine months of the current fiscal (2015-16) compared with the corresponding period of the last fiscal, according to an official figure released by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) on Tuesday.
The figure showed that the country fetched $24.95 billion from exports during July-March period of the current fiscal and the apparel sector alone contributed to 82 per cent of the total exports.
Export earnings from the ready-made garments hit $20.44 billion during the period.
Out of the $20.44 billion fetched by the apparel sector so far in this fiscal, woven garments contributed to $10.76 billion, showing a 12.64 per cent year-on-year growth.
Besides, earnings from knitwear products exports reached $9.67 billion, registering a 6.68 per cent growth during the nine months of the current fiscal compared with the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.
Although apparel sector performed as usual, most other export sectors except pharmaceuticals performed worse than last year.
Exports from pharmaceuticals showed a 14 per cent growth during the said period.
The EPB figure showed that shrimps export dropped by 15.25 per cent, leather by 30 per cent, bicycles by 25.57 per cent, tea by 39 per cent and fruits and vegetables by over 40 per cent.
“Export growth during the first nine months of the current fiscal was satisfactory and the apparel sector as usual remained the prime contributor to the export basket,” Mafruha Sultana, Vice-Chairman and CEO of EPB told The New Nation on Thursday.
She said, “Our export is still showing signs of stability growing more than 10 per cent per months this year. If such a trend continues in the months to come, hopefully, we will able to reach this year’s export target”.
Mafruha Sultana expressed her hope that Bangladesh’s export growth would exceed 10 per cent in the fiscal 2015-16.
Earlier, the government had set an export target of $33.5 billion for the ongoing fiscal.
The target was 7.38 per cent more than that of the 2014-15 fiscal.
Bangladesh exported goods worth $31.2 billion against the target of $33.2 billion in the fiscal 2014-15.
