Experts support integrated examination system for universities

A workshop on “Report of Examination System in Public and Private University” was held at UGC auditorium on Sunday.
UGC Chairman (State Minister) Prof Dr A K Azad Chowdhury attended the programme as Chief Guest. While UGC Member Prof Dr Mohammad Mohabbat Khan and Senior Operations Officer of World Bank Dr Mokhlesur Rahman were the Special Guests on the occasion. Md Zahangir Alam, ndc (Additional Secretary), Project Director of Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) chaired the function.
Prof Dr Md Akhtar Hossain, Member and UGC, Prof Dr M Muhibur Rahman, former Member, UGC also spoke on the occasion. Sohel Ahmed, Deputy Project Director, HEQEP gave the welcome address and Dr Aftabun Nahar Maksuda, Chief Research Officer (Joint-Secretary), Strategic Policy Unit, HEQEP presented key-note paper on the occasion.
A comprehensive study was conducted by the Strategy Policy Unit (SPU) of UGC on the examination system in thirteen public and four private universities during 2013-2014.
The key-note paper presenter said that one examination system instead of two may be introduced to the public universities to reduce additional time for evaluation and delay in publication of results. Semester system should be introduced in all the public universities replacing the ongoing annual or course system. Academic calendar should be followed strictly for introducing admission test on cluster immediately after the HSC result. Full automation should be introduced for tabulation of marks and publication of results in both public and private universities. UGC needs to take steps for introducing uniform honorarium for the examiners of the public universities. Credit transfer between the institutions within the country needs to be introduced in both public and private universities, the key-note paper added.
UGC Chairman said that integrated examination system should be introduced in the universities. Examination system is very important for ensuring quality education. Teachers’ evaluation by the students is hardly done in our country, he added.
He emphasized on reorganizing examination marking system in the universities. He also said that credit transfer from public to public universities and private to private universities should be introduced.
Vice-Chancellors, Pro Vice-Chancellors, Deans, Senior Professors of different public and private universities, UGC Secretary Dr Md Khaled, and high officials of UGC, representatives from World Bank and HEQEP, among others were present on the occasion.
