Experts stress protection of forests, wildlife at any cost

Speakers at an event in Sylhet said natural forests and the wildlife should be protected rightly at any cost for the sake of our existence.
“Due to different reasons, the rich forests of the country had been on decline, we all need to pay much care to protect those for environmental reasons and bio-diversity”, they said at the general meeting of the Co-Management Council of Khadimnagar National Park at Sadar upazila council recently.
Divisional Forest Officer RSM Munirul Islam, also an advisor to the council committee said an environment-friendly system has been on practice at the Khadimnagar national Park since October 2009.
The government is now patronising environment friendly tourism as a good number of people have much interest on the preservation of nature, he said while seeking allout cooperation from all concerned in protecting the natural forests here.
Sadar upazila parishad chairman Ashfaque Ahmed, also an advisor to the council said, “We all have to protect the natural resources on the renowned Khadimnagar forest and national park. The co-management committee, which is entrusted with the task of its management would be given all out support,” he added.
Chairing the event, UNO Kaizer Md. Farabi said protecting the natural forests at the Khadimnagar National Forest is an example success of co-management system through the participation of locals alongside the forest officials.
Sustainable forest management could be ensured through coordinated efforts by the locals and the forest officials, he added.
Annual progress report of the co-management committee was also discussed while the meeting approved their development programme worth Tk 3.19 million for 2017-2018 as it was Tk 2.9 million in 2016-2017 session.
Besides, forest’s beat officer Md. Mostafizur Rahman was honoured for his laudable services in protecting forest resources at the Khadimnagar National Forest.
