Experts at a discussion here on Friday underscored the need for enhancing digital literacy and strong social media monitoring mechanism to combat cybercrime and propaganda in the country.
They said Bangladesh needs to have separate cyber police to deal with cybercrimes and propaganda.
The discussion titled ‘Combating Cybercrime and Propaganda’ was held in the city as part of the Digital World 2017, the country’s biggest IT exposition.
The four-day IT exhibition being held at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre will end on Saturday.
Mohammad Arfe Elahi, IT Manager of a2i programme of the Prime Minister’s
Office, said the government has already planned to introduce a social media mechanism, which is important to combat cybercrime and propaganda. “A process is on to form a team to scan social media propaganda and crimes with a view to containing these,” he said.
Elahi said digital literacy needs to be increased to remove cybercrime phobia. “We need to include ‘cyber security and propaganda’ in the textbooks of schools and colleges to create awareness in this regard,” he added.
He also said Bangladesh needs to have a cyber-information centre. “The government is enacting a digital security law where there will be a provision to establish a cyber-security council and a cyber-information centre will be set up in the possible council.”
Lutfor Rahman, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CONTESSA Solutions and Consultants Ltd, said corporate houses and companies should raise awareness among their employees about preventive measures of cybercrimes.
Shyamal B Das, Chief Technical Officer of Brac Bank, said, “We can’t stop cybercrimes, but we must build awareness against such crimes.”
Prof Dr Touhid Bhuiyan, Director of Cyber Security Centre of Daffodil International University, made a PowerPoint presentation at the programme.
In the presentation, he said, “Though propaganda can be carried out through various media, even song, we need to give more focus on combating propaganda in social networks as propaganda can be spread rapidly to a large number of people through the social media.”
