Expecting bumper production of Mustard in Manikganj

Farmers and officials of DAE of the district are expecting a bumper production of mustard in the current season.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said good yield of the winter crop and its fair price during the last several years, farmers of all seven upazilas of the district are spreading the areas of mustard cultivation.
Easy cultivation and harvesting process and lower production cost is also a reason behind the popularity of mustard cultivation in the areas, the sources said.
Alauddin, one of the mustard cultivators of Nabagram village under Sadar upazila said, after harvesting the Aman, they started cultivation of mustard in their lands and after harvesting the mustard they would cultivate in the same land their main crop Boro.
DAE sources said a total of 43,149 hectares of land was brought under the cultivation in seven upazilas of the district during the current season with the production target of 49,661 tonnes of mustard.
Most of the lands of the district were cultivated varieties by Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI), including Tori-7, Bari-14 and Bari-15. A few local varieties including Rai Sharisha was also been cultivated, DAE office sources said.
Abdul Wahab , another cultivator of Gilando village said he cultivated mustard in six bighas of land high yielding varieties invented by BARI.
