Expatriate Bangladeshis have sent home a record $500 million in a week ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr, the central bank says.
The figure is the highest for a week, Bangladesh Bank’s Forex Reserve and Treasury Management Division General Manager Kazi Saidur Rahman said.
Bangladesh recorded a $555.6 million remittance in the first 10 days of July, he told bdnews24.com on Monday.
The inflow has driven the foreign exchange reserves to $24.74 billion.
Rahman said people working or living abroad usually send more money to their families back home before festivals like Eid.
The country received $15.31 billion in remittance in the last 2014-15 fiscal year – 7.6 percent higher than the year before.
