Excellent yield of jute expected in Rangpur zone

Jute plants in five districts under Rangpur agriculture region are growing well, signaling an excellent yield of the golden fibre this year.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur sources the department has set a target to cultivate jute on around 63,600 hectares of land during this season in five districts under the zone. The districts are: Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat. This year jute farming may exceed target, sources also said.
Ojiar Rahman, a farmer of Char Thakurdas village at Kawnia upazila in Rangpur said that he cultivated the crop on around one acre of land during this season and the condition of its growth is satisfactory. Smooth supply of water and agri-inputs such as fertilisers and pesticides has boosted its cultivation, he also said.
Rabiul, another farmer of village Nabdiganj at Pirgachha upazila in Rangpur said he cultivated the crop on one and half bigha of land this year and is expecting a bumper production of the crop, if the weather remains conducive. Last year he also got good yield as well as satisfactory price of the crop which encouraged him to enhance its farming this season, he further said.
Sources said like in the mainland, the landless and river eroded char people have also brought more char lands under jute farming this year.
DAE S, M ,Asraf Ali sources said timely and sufficient supply of agri-inputs enhanced its cultivation in the region this year, making the farmers hopeful of a good output of the crop.
