The brain behind crushing proxy war in Jammu and Kashmir during late 1990s, General K V Krishna Rao (retd), the 14th Chief of the Army Staff of Indian Army, passed away yesterday in Army’s Research and Referral Hospital. The 93-year-old Gen Rao died of
cardiac arrest, sources in the hospital said. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and Army Chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag condoled his demise. The Defence Minister said with the passing away of Gen Rao, the country has lost one of its best known military leaders. “He was a visionary who led ably, inspired a generation of soldiers and initiated modernisation of the Indian Army in the early 1980s. His contribution in the 1971 war and maintaining the unity and integrity of the country shall always be remembered,” he said. Having distinction of serving as the Governor with the longest term in five states-Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Jammu and Kashmir, Gen Rao was credited with neutralising the proxy war in Kashmir between 1993 and 1997. When a proxy war developed in Jammu and Kashmir and reached its peak, he was reappointed as governor and served there from March 1993 to May 1998. In this capacity, he was instrumental in restoring peace and democracy in the insurgency-riven state. Gen Rao had an illustrious career spanning over four decades in the Indian Army.
