UNB, Dhaka :
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Thursday reduced the jail term of former Bangladesh ambassador to the UAE ATM Nazimullah to 14 days in a graft case filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).
The four-member Appellate Division bench, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, gave the order reducing the three-year jail term earlier handed down to the ex-envoy by a High Court bench.
However, the apex court upheld the Tk 6,84,699 fine against the envoy. He had already paid the fine and submitted the copy of the money order to the court.
Barrister Rokonuddin Mahmud and AM Aminuddin argued for the convict during the hearing while Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan stood for the ACC.
As the former ambassador has already served 14 days in jail in the case, he was set free after the verdict.
On May 14, 2008, the ACC filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station against Nazimullah on charges of causing a loss of Tk 21 lakh to the state exchequer through misuse of power and deception.
ACC Deputy Director Abdullah Al Zahid filed the case accusing Nazimullah of irregularities in renting the ambassador’s house and corruption in purchasing furniture and appointing gardeners at his residence.
On November 16, 2008, the Dhaka Special Judge’s Tribunal-9 sentenced the accused to five years’ imprisonment and fined him Tk 21 lakh.
As the convict appealed against the trial court order, the High Court in 2013 reduced his jail term to three years, and also the fine to Tk 6,84,699. Later, the convict filed a review petition with the Appellate Division.
