Campus Report :
The size of national budget in Bangladesh is increasing every year, but economists have called on the government to be more responsible in revenue expenditure. According to them, by giving subsidies to the defaulter organizations for years government loses revenue even as a defaulting culture is encouraged. Besides, they believe that money is being wasted in many development projects as well. Prof Dr Mustafizur Rahman, Distinguished Fellow, CPD and Barrister Nihad Kabir, President, the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industries made these comments in a seminar organized by the Economics Club of East West University (EWU) on Wednesday at Aftabnagar in the capital.
They also observed that in order to enter the ranks of the developed countries by 2041, the government is prirotizing bringing the majority of people under income tax and creating more skilled human resources.
Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, Chairperson, Board of Trustees, EWU and the former of Bangladesh Bank was the chief guest of the seminar. Prof Dr M M Shahidul Hasan, Vice-Chancellor, EWU was the special guest. Prof Dr Fakrul Alam along with faculty members and students of the Economics Department were present on the occasion.
