Hawkers on Tuesday demonstrated blocking roads in city’s Gulistan area to press their demand for running businesses on the footpaths ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr.
They also demanded for a meeting with the Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), Sayeed Khokon, from the demonstration.
Hundreds of hawkers took to the street around 11:00am and were demonstrating blocking the roads halting traffic on one of the busiest areas in the capital.
“Around 1,500 hawkers from the Gulistan, New Market and Paltan areas gathered to protest after being evicted from footpaths,” officer-in-charge (OC) of Paltan Police Station Mahmudul Haque told the reporters.
Additional police forces have been deployed in the area to avoid any untoward incident.
The city authorities evicted street vendors from footpaths in Gulistan and New Market areas over an year ago.
After the eviction, the hawkers were assured of an audience with the DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon to find a solution.
On Monday, the hawkers surrounded the DSCC offices and wanted to know when they would be able to sit with the mayor.
