RU Correspondent :
The English Department of Rajshahi University (RU) is continuing its evening courses ignoring the order of the University Grants Commission (UGC). A notification regarding admission in Masters of Arts degree and certificate courses has been published at the university website recently.
Earlier on 9 December last year, president M Abdul Hamid criticized such courses at the convocation programme of Dhaka University saying the commercial courses are turning public universities into business institutions disrupting the campus atmosphere.
Following this remark, the UGC ordered the closure of such courses at all the public universities, noting that running of evening courses tarnishes the features and reputation of public universities.
It came up with the order containing a 13-point directive in a letter sent to all the public universities about properly following the rules and regulations in the higher educational institutions on December 11 last year.
On 24 that month, RU formed an 11-member committee headed by Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Ananda Kumar Saha to consider whether the university would continue its evening courses.
According to sources, on 15 January, an admission notification of evening Masters courses and certificate courses had been published at the university’s website signed by arts faculty dean, English department chair, evening MA in English committee and evening MA in ELT (English Language Teaching) chief.
The applicants’ eligibility, admission tests schedule, passing number and necessary information are mentioned in that notification.
Asking in a question, English Department chair Prof Abdullah Al Mamun said that as per the university ordinance, the academic commission has passed a final decision to closure the evening courses.
If the university is taken a decision to closure such courses from all departments, we are ready to stop that course.
However, the university committee has not taken effective steps till now.
However, Professor Ananda Kumar Saha said the New Nation that final decisions are not taken yet for closure of evening courses, adding that there is no chance to start evening courses after announcement of closure of evening courses.
