The European Union (EU) has reiterated its plan to work closely with the government of Bangladesh for sustainable economic development of the country.
“EU will continue to work closely with the government to improve socio-economic condition of Bangladesh,” Jean Lambert, Chairperson of the delegation for relations with South Asia of the European Parliament stated this when she met Foreign Minister Mahmood Ali at the State Guest House Padma on Monday.
Earlier, a four-member delegation from the European Parliament (EP) arrived in Dhaka on Sunday evening on a two-day visit to discuss factory safety and workers rights issues, besides reviewing the post-poll political situation.
Praising Bangladesh’s remarkable achievement in the socio-economic sector, Jean Lambert added that a democratic and politically stable environment in the country is required to keep up the continued success in economy and social development.
Welcoming the European Parliament delegation to Bangladesh, the Foreign Minister Mahmood Ali expressed satisfaction on the excellent relationship existing between Bangladesh and the EU.
Terming the EU as an old and tested friend of Bangladesh, he said the EU is playing a crucial role in the development of Bangladesh.
The Minister also conveyed Bangladesh’s deep appreciation to the chair of the delegation for EU’s valuable contribution, continued cooperation and assistance for sustainable economic development and struggle for achieving self reliance.
He stressed on the Government’s commitment to uphold democracy, rule of law and good governance in the country.
Thanking the EU for its continued support in providing Duty-Free, Quota-Free access for the LDC countries including Bangladesh in the EU market under its EBA arrangement, the Foreign Minister acknowledged the EU’s support in improving the work environment in the RMG sector in Bangladesh.
The 27-nation bloc is the largest importer of Bangladesh’s ready-made garment products that enjoy duty-free access in its market.
The Foreign Minister also apprised the delegation of the efforts of the Government to achieve a safe and friendly work environment in the sector.
He also stressed that the buyers should also consider fair price of products so that it could enable the exporters to improve the work environment and raise the wages further.
Highlighting the importance of the issue of climate change, the Foreign Minister appreciated the EU assistance and funding in adaptation project in Bangladesh. Both the Foreign Minister and the visiting dignitaries agreed on a more meaningful partnership between Bangladesh and the EU.
The visiting European Parliament Delegation will also meet the Prime Minister, the Speaker and the Commerce Minister during their stay in Bangladesh.
