UNB, Dhaka :
Bangladesh origin British lawmaker Tulip Siqqiq has said the result of the European Union (EU) referendum has posed an “enormous challenge” to their economic and political future.
“We will all now begin a larger discussion about the consequences of the referendum and our collective future in the coming days, but for now,” said the Labour Party MP and niece of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
She hoped that they can work together to protect
those most at risk from the coming changes to their country. Labour Party MPs of Bangladeshi origin Rushanara Ali and Rupa Huq also campaigned with Tulip in favour of Britain remaining in the EU. Sheikh Hasina also favored Britain to remain with the EU and conveyed it to British Prime Minister David Cameron during their meeting in Japan recently.
“I respect the outcome of the democratic process, and would like to place on record my thanks to campaigners across Camden and Brent who fought tirelessly for a Remain vote,” she wrote in her blog. The text is available on her official Facebook page.
She also wrote, “I share their dismay at the result, however our focus must now turn to healing the divisions in our society that this bitter campaign has created. We can and must remember that more unites us than sets us apart.”
