EU diplomats hold meeting with BNP leaders

Staff Reporter :A meeting between a group of BNP leaders and a group of diplomats of the European Union was held on Thursday evening at the residence of BNP standing committee member Dr Abdul Moeen Khan at Gulshan in the city. The envoys of France, Australia, Netherlands, Denmark, Spain and Sweden joined the meeting, while six BNP leaders, including Moeen Khan, standing committee members Gen (Retd) Mahbubur Rahman and Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah, attended the meeting on behalf of the BNP. Political representative of Canada also joined the meeting. Sources said that the BNP leaders and the foreign diplomats discussed the prevailing political situation of Bangladesh. The meeting was held in the wake of the countrywide political unrest. But, the BNP leaders or the foreign diplomats did not talk with journalists about the agenda of the meeting till filing of the report at about 10:00 pm. The meeting began at about 8:00 pm and it was continued for about one hour. Earlier on Wednesday, the heads of missions of several countries and the envoys of the EU held a meeting with Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali. In the meeting, the foreign diplomats expressed concern over the ongoing political situation in the country. The envoys had urged all parties to engage in dialogue to end the current impasse.
