UNB, Dhaka :
Ekushey Television (ETV) channel’s picture went off air in different parts of the capital on Monday.
The channel’s screen went black on television about 2:30 pm on Monday, and remained so till filing of this report, giving rise to speculation that the private television channel had been taken off air by the authorities.
However, ETV authorities say the channel’s transmission is running as usual, and it is continuing to telecast programmes according to its schedule. “Blackout was reported in different parts of the city. It may have been due to a technical glitch at the cable operators’ end, who disseminate our telecast in the private sector,” a senior reporter of ETV told UNB.
Earlier, speculation over ETV’s possible closure was spurred by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia raising the suspicion that the government had taken ETV off air, when she spoke to journalists while besieged by police inside the premises of her Gulshan office.
A senior official of the Information Ministry however confirmed to UNB that the government had taken no such action.
According to the official the “over-enthusiastic” local cable operators may have partially suspended the dissemination of the ETV telecast. Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu will brief media today in this regard.
