Essentials’ prices continue to rise

The prices of daily commodities continue to rise in the city’s kitchen markets to the dismay of the poor people. The price of edible oil is really painful, for it increased by 50 percent within a short period. However, rice price has remained stable in last two weeks.
Most of the vegetables’ price is high. The round brinjal was selling at Tk 80 per kilogram at Baganbari, South Goran, Dhaka on Saturday. The price of most of the vegetables except Potato is above Tk50.
Arum and Papaya were selling at below Tk 50, while green chilly at Tk 220, coarse rice at minimum Tk 50 and fine quality of rice at Tk 70 only.
Ali Hossain, a resident of Malibagh area of the capital, who works for a private company, said, “The way the prices of goods have gone up is illogical.He said that, on the one hand, the salary of the private companies’ employees has decreased, on the other hand, the expenditure has increased.
It has been seen that the price of loose coarse flour has increased by more than Tk 7 per kg in a week. The flour that was available at Tk 35 per kg last week is now being sold at Tk 42. According to the Trade Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), the price of loose coarse flour has surged by 16 per cent in a week.
Traders say the price of broiler chicken has been rising for more than two months without break. What was Tk 110 per kg a week ago is now Tk 170 only. Razzak Ali,
 
 a chicken trader near the Gopibagh Railgate said, the price of broiler chicks has soared for more than two months..
According to TCB, the price of broiler chicken jumped by Tk 30 per kg in the last one month.. In other words, it has risen by Tk 60 in two months. According to statistics, the price of broiler chicken is increasing by Tk 10 per kg every week.
Market data says that the price of onion has also increased anew. Compared with last week, the price of imported onion has increased by Tk five to eight per kg this week. Retailers say the price of local onion has gone up by Tk 10 per kg. The onion that was sold at Tk 40 per kg last week is being sold this week at Tk 48 to 50 per kg. Last week, they sold imported onions at Tk 42 per kg. This week they are selling at Tk 50 per kg.
Alamgir Hossain, an onion trader from Maniknagar area of the capital, said the wholesale price of onion has increased by Tk five to six per kg. He said the supply of domestic onions in the market has decreased a bit.
Meanwhile, the price of fine rice has increased by more than one taka per kg. Similarly, the price of medium brand of rice has increased by about Taka two per kg. Rice traders say that the rice they sold last week at Tk 65 per kg is now being sold at Tk 66 per kg.
Eggs are being sold at Tk 115 per dozen, beef at Tk 580-600 and mutton at Tk 800 per kg.
Meanwhile, green chilly is being sold in the market at Tk 200-220 per kg. Ladies finger at Tk 50 per kg, Bitter gourd at Tk 50-70, purbal at Tk 50-60, Papaya at Tk 20-30, French at Tk 80, a piece of medium size cabbage at Tk 60, Cauliflower small size at Tk 50, Beans at Tk 120, Eggplant at Tk 70, tomato at Tk 120, carrot (China) at Tk 160, cucumber at Tk 70 and potato at Tk 20 per kg.
On the other hand, one and a half kg of hilsa is being sold at Tk 1,700 per kg, one kg of hilsa at Tk 1,200 per kg and 800 gram hilsa at Tk 1,100 per kg.
Besides, rohit fish is being sold at Tk 280-320, Carp fish at Tk 280-300, Climbing fish at Tk 200, tilapia at Tk 150-160, scorpion fish at Tk 450-600, Pangas at Tk 140-150, river shrimp at Tk 600 and Butter fish at Tk 300 per kg.
