Staff Reporter :
Jatiya Party President HM Ershad has said, “Formalin is not a matter of joke. It has its harmful effect in the society. So, if his party is voted to power again, he will ban the use of formalin.”
He made the remarks at such time when the top Awami League and the BNP leaders were exchanging
attacking words between them centering formalin, a chemical stabilizer.
“Every day we read the news of murder in the newspapers. But the leaders of the two parties are making fun of formalin. It has shocked me,” said Ershad at the party’s Banani office on Monday.
In sharp reaction to the BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s statement that the government was ‘rotting’, the Prime Minister and Awami League Chief Sheikh Hasina hit back as saying, “It is the BNP that is decaying, and not the government. The government is, rather, keeping BNP alive with the help of formalin.”
BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday called the Sheikh Hasina’s government a government of formalin.
Unhappy with such remarks, the Jatiya Party Chief H M Ershad whipped the top leaders of both the parties.
“Formalin is used in fish, vegetables and fruits. You have brought formalin into the field of politics which is unwanted. You should be ashamed of that. What kind of society are we living in? Is it a democratic society? Is it a civilised society? The country is on the verge of ruin. There is no law and discipline, and no democratic values. If I am voted to power, I will ban formalin in seven days,” he said.
The chief of the Jatiya Party, the main opposition in the Parliament, expressed his dismay with the prevailing situation in the country.
Under the circumstances, Ershad called upon party activists to unite to strengthen the party.
