BSS, Faridpur :
A serious erosion has started on the eastern bank of the river Padma in Faridpur where about fifty meters area of the town protection embankment near Dholar intersection eroded in the early hours today.
According to locals and Water Development sources, suddenly the town protection embankment that is built of Cement Concrete (CC) blocks collapsed as the water level is rising.
WDB sources also mentioned an area of ten kilometers from Dholar intersection to Signboard on the eastern bank, the embankment with CC blocks was constructed at an estimated cost of Taka 198 crore.
WDB sources told BSS that indiscriminate sand lifting from the river bed by the dredgers, excavators and through other means has caused this situation.
Some unscrupulous and influential people carried on the sand lifting ignoring the authorities. Moreover, movement of a huge number of trucks loaded with lifted sand also worsened the situation, sources added.
LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Engineer Khondoker Mosharraf Hossain has instructed the officials concerned to take urgent measures to stop the erosion immediately.
Deputy Commissioner Sardar Sharafat Ali, other officials and WDB personnels visited the spot and started taking protection measures by throwing sand bags and CC blocks.
