Equipment of Khulna Jute Commodities testing centre being damaged

Valuable equipment worth crores of taka of Khulna Jute Commodities Testing Centre, located at city’s Boyra area are being damaged. Employees have been working amid life risks. The government, however, are being deprived of getting huge amount of revenue.
On a recent visit, this correspondent found a haunted environment in the office. Only three officers were found there who told this correspondent that they are in risk. After rounding ground floor and 1st floor, it is understood that their statements are true.
Concerned sources said, this building was established in 1980 with the financial and technical aids of UNDP. Three modern jute commodities testing centers were established in Khulna, Dhaka and Chittagong, sources added.
By expensing taka one crore, equipments were set in this centre. Two large air conditioners are also available here. Other equipments were damaged due to rain. Iron rods are found at the rooftops and ceiling . The cracks are found at several parts of the building. The building may collapse at any moment. Staffs do not enter into the laboratory in fear of collapsing. Three signboards are available outside the office which also became dilapidated.
Shah Alam, office assistant-cum-computer operator said, “We have been working here amid life risk, higher officials came here, visited the office and assured of renovating the building, but it was not reformed still.”
Moktar Ali, Inspector (commodities) said, Some high officials visited the building at the beginning of this year . They told that the building would be renovated by Taka 77 lakh, but We find nothing.
Moslehuddin, Director General of Jute Directorate told the newsmen that there are three jute goods testing centers are in dilapidated condition. Machinery parts of these are also out of order. New machines will be purchased and the buildings will be renovated within short time. Due to have been laid for a long time, the equipments were damaged, Moslehuddin added.
In the reply of a query, Moslehuddin told the journalists that he could not say who is responsible for this.
