Staff Reporter :
The Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has planned to introduce more new and underused vaccine aims at accelerating action to increase awareness as well as coverage by 2018.
The announcement came at a press briefing in the conference room of DGHS on Sunday, marking the World Immunisation Week 2017 that began yesterday.
DGHS Director General Prof Dr Abul Kalam Azad speaking at the briefing
said EPI in Bangladesh has been recognised for its sustained high vaccination coverage and great contribution to the reduction in childhood morbidity and mortality.
It provides almost universal access to immunisation services as measured by the percentage of children under one year age receiving BCG, which has increased from 2 percent in 1985 to 99 percent in 2015, he said.
In line with the theme of the Global Immunisation Week, National EPI has planned to observe the week focusing on the theme of “Vaccines work to save lives” with the aims of accelerating action to increase awareness, create demand for immunisation by communities, and stimulate the national and sub-national actors to eliminate the gaps of immunisation and increase coverage.
Different activities are planned at national and sub national levels to observe the week, Dr Azad said.
