UNB, Dhaka :
The visiting delegation of the European Parliament (EP) on Tuesday had discussion with leaders of the country’ s apparel sectors on various aspects of the readymade garment industry and labour rights.
The delegation is here to see the progress made so far in the RMG sector in line with the European Union’s Sustainability Compact. The Sustainability Compact was launched on July 8 2013 to promote continuous improvements in labour rights and factory safety in the RMG and knitwear industry in Bangladesh.
Chair of the Committee on International Trade (INTA) Bernd Lange and Chair of the delegation for relations with the countries of South Asia Jean Lambert are among the delegation members who are visiting Bangladesh to discuss trade and labour rights issues with various stakeholders.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President M Siddiqur Rahman, EU Ambassador Pierre Mayaudon and apparel sector’s leaders were present.
The delegation members will meet the press on Thursday before wrapping up the visit.
The Sustainability Compact brings together the European Union (EU), the government of Bangladesh, the United States, Canada and the ILO accompanied by employers, trade unions and other key stakeholders to promote continuous improvements in labour rights and factory safety in the RMG industry.
The Compact is built on short- and long-term commitments related to three inter-linked pillars: respect for labour rights; structural integrity of buildings and occupational safety and health; and responsible business conduct. Within the framework of the Compact, the ILO has undertaken to support and monitor implementation of a number of specific commitments made by the parties.
Since 2013, the ILO and the European Commission have worked together to monitor progress against the different Compact objectives, report on progress through web-based communication and other means, and organise reviews involving all Compact parties.
