EP HR team starts visit today

A delegation of European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights will start their four-day visit here from Tuesday to witness human rights and political situation in Bangladesh.
Dan Preda in his facebook page and twitter account wrote that they have three objectives during the visit.
These are inspection of several textile factories and holding talks with local unions, seeing how they responded to accidents and the current situation of the rights of employees who produce for the European market; meetings with NGOs engaged in civil and political rights, including of Rohingya and discuss with the political forces – Awami League and BNP.
The delegation members will meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, opposition leader Raushon Ershad and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, according to a diplomatic source.
The delegation will also meet Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Law Minister Anisul Huq and State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam.
During their visit, the delegation would also hold meetings with civil society members, business leaders and NGOs’. Earlier, the EP, in a resolution, urged the BNP to cut ties with Jamaat and Hefajat and firmly said the political parties associated with “terrorist acts” in Bangladesh should be banned. “(The European Parliament) urges the BNP to unequivocally distance itself from Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefajat-e Islam”.
