Environ pollution takes serious turn in Cumilla

Environment pollution, especially emission of huge quantity toxic elements with black smoke from unfit vehicles and noise pollution are increasing day by day across the district.
Recently, this pollution has taken a serious turn creating grave and irreparable damage to the environment. But the concerned authority is blind to take any legal measures to bring it under control, locals alleged.
According to a recent investigation, eighty percent of air pollution is caused by emitting huge quantity of toxic smoke from unfitness vehicles like cars, buses, trucks, taxies, minibuses, trains and others. Unfitness vehicles, especially, those have problems in engine are greatly responsible for air pollution, claimed environment specialists. Black smoke from unfitness vehicles contains sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides that are harmful to the ecological balance and also for the human body, said environment specialists.
Besides, noise pollution has become another phenomenon for the environment across the district. It is also increasing at an alarming rate. Noise pollution includes noise of cars, buses, and trucks, motor vehicles, loudspeakers use in different cultural and social programme, and many others high-intensity sound from different medium which is extremely harmful to the environment.
Along with air and noise pollution, waterlogging, setting up new welding factories without following legal procedures, use of nitric acid to make gold ornament are also damaging the ecological balance and human body, environment specialists said.
Talking to UNB, Professor Dr Mosleh Uddin, president of Comilla Environment Movement and former professor of Comilla Medical College Hospital, said to establish a healthy environment society is very important for human being. “The next generation will face the threat of existence if we fail to control environmental pollution.”
The organizations are working for the welfare of the environment, should take necessary sustainable and effective measures to save the environment from various pollution. The environment department has to be more careful in this regard and to create awareness among the mass people, the professor added.
Deputy Director Samsul Islam of Department of Environment in Cumilla, said “Now we are working to control noise pollution across the district. We are taking necessary legal steps against unnecessary use of loudspeakers, hydraulic brake and welding factories that set up without following legal procedures.”
Besides, different social programmes have been taken to create awareness among the mass people and to make them understand regarding the importance of healthy ecological balance, the official added.
