Ensuring marketing facilities for char farmers stressed

Speakers at a function stressed the need for ensuring marketing facilities for the char farmers to help them get fair prices against their produces.
“The char farmers produce different crops in the char land by working hard, but they do not get fair prices against their crops for want of marketing facilities causing they can not recoup the production cost”, they said.
They made the comments while addressing an opinion exchange meeting with the char farmers at Baruarbazar under Sreepur union of Sundarganj upazila in the district on Thursday.
GUK (Gana Unnayan Kendra)-Char Campaign Group arranged the meeting under Campaign for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods funded by Oxfam and GROW.
Upazila agriculture officer (UAO) Satyen Sen attended the function and addressed it as the chief guest while farmer Angur Mondal presided over the meeting.
The meeting was also addressed, among others, by sub assistant agriculture officers of department of agriculture extension Liton Miah and Mahbubur Rahman, programme officer (Agriculture) of GUK Selina Akter and programme officer (Marketing) Mominul Islam.
The UAO said as the char farmers were playing significant role to help the government achieve food security through producing crops, different facilities should be ensured for them to make the crops farming in the char continued.
He also urged all the concerned including the donor agencies to stand beside the char farmers here and provide need base facilities to them to boost production of agri crops there to change their lots economically.
Many problems regarding crops production, preservation and marketing raised from the farmers were discussed elaborately and pragmatic measures with recommendations also adopted to resolve it at the greater interest of the farmers.
A total of 60 farmers including 39 female ones coming from different chars of Kapasia, Sreepur and Horipur unions of the upazila took part in the meeting.
