Ensure right to food to ensure human rights

Speakers at a post rally human chain programme here on Thursday afternoon demanded ensuring the right to food and food security for all people to guarantee their universal human rights.
They called for ensuring supply of pure foods at reasonable price stopping adulteration and making the country self-sufficient in food through innovation and adoption of the time-befitting agricultural technologies consistent with climate change.
Rangpur district unit of Right to Food Campaign organised the programme at Paira Chattar premises in the city with its Convener and Programme Manager (Field Coordination) of RDRS Bangladesh Marina Ahmed in the chair.
The programmes were arranged here in observance of the World Food Day-2014 with the theme of ‘Feeding the world, caring for the Earth.’
Co-convener of the organisation and Executive Director of Debi Chowdhurani Polli Unnayan Kendra Nurul Islam Dulu delivered the keynote message in the programme and demanded for enactment of Right to Food Act.
Members of the organisation and executives of different NGOs, including Abdus Salam Sarker of RDSS, Shyamol Mohanta of Nagorik Uddog, Abu Sayeed of BRAC, Ferdousi Begum of Rajendrapur Samaj Kallyan Sangstha, Mukul Das of World Vision Bangladesh, SM Samrat of PASS and Saiful Islam of RBNS, spoke.
Earlier, executives, officials and employees of these NGOs, students, civil society members, professionals and local elite participated in the rally that paraded the streets from Public Library to Paira Chattar in the city.
The speakers said the human rights of all people could not be established without ensuring their right to food and food security and asked the government for enacting Right to Food Act as soon as possible.
They said that Bangladesh is the worst sufferer of global warming and climate change and is facing challenge to ensure its national food security for growing population overcoming frequent natural disasters and calamities.
Terming agriculture as the worst affected sector following adverse impacts of climate change, they called upon the responsible nations to reduce emission of green house gases and put importance on overcoming the emerging risks to ensure food security.
Later, leaders of Right to Food Campaign submitted a memorandum to the government through the Deputy Commissioner demanding for enactment of Right to Food Act to ensure food security for all people in the society.
