EngenderHealth Collaborating with BSMMU for women’s health in Bangladesh

Sumon Sen Gupta, the Asian Representative of EngenderHealth Inc. along with Ms. Permi Gill from EngenderHealth New York office visited the University Fistula Center at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on Thursday.
The center is dedicated for prevention and care of female genital fistula in Bangladesh. Obstetric fistula is a devastating condition caused by birth injury. Thousands of women are living a miserable life with this problem in Bangladesh.
Fistula victims suffers from continuous leaking of urine and/or stool through the birth canal. In the past two years the University Fistula Center at BSMMU has successfully repaired over hundred fistula cases.
The visiting team met Prof. Sharfuddin Ahmed, the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University and expressed their interest to work for improving the quality of women’s health in Bangladesh including Family Planning services in collaboration with the University. EngenderHealth supported Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University to establish University Fistula Center through their Fistula through their Fistula Care Plus Project being funded by USAID.
EngenderHealth is known globally as a leading organization for improving women’s health and rights including Family Planning. In Bangladesh, EngenderHealth in supporting Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for improving maternal and child health situation. Prof. Sharfuddin Ahmed Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University welcomed EngenderHealth to work with the University.
He hoped that with the support of National and International partner’s Bangladesh will achieve Sustainable Development Goals before the time line as we did for the Millennium Development Goals. He said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University is ready to work with all the stakeholder for improving the health of men, women and children in Bangladesh.
