Enforce administrative steps to stop smoking in public

The administrative enforcement steps is must for the implementation of tobacco control laws in public place and transport.
Abu Naser Khan, Adviser of Anti-Tobacco Alliance and Chairman of Poribesh Bachao Andolon (PABA) said it at a program presided over by Elias Uddin Palash, Editor of DeshKal.
Aid Foundation and Bangladesh Anti-Tobacco Alliance organized a press conference with the help of The Union at Dhaka Reporters Unity on Wednesday.
Executive Director Aminul Islam Bakul, Senior Program Officer Kazi Mohammad Hasibul Haque and Advocacy Officer Abu Naser Anik of Aid Foundation were present at the programme. A compliance Analysis Survey-2019 on tobacco released at it.
Kazi Mohammad Hasibul said that the survey was conducted in four districts of Khulna Division. We have observed the implementation of tobacco control laws in Jessore, Jhenaidah, Kushtia and Chuadanga that there should have administrative enforcement steps for the implementation of tobacco control laws in public place and transport for getting
benefit from the laws.
He said that no warning sign was found in the bus terminals of the four districts.
The survey data shows that 25 percent of people smoked in small public transport. In addition, nine percent in court areas, 42 percent in market places, 4.7 percent in children’s parks, five percent in cinema halls, five percent in educational institutions, five percent in hospitals and clinics, and 1.5 percent in local government institutions.
Elias Uddin Palash said, that government, NGOs and other organizations need to play the appropriate role in regulating tobacco by forming the task force committee and local government institutions should be more active in strengthening tobacco control activities.
Abu Naser Khan said most people in the country are aware of the ill effects of tobacco. This is our strength. Through the full implementation of Tobacco Control Act, future generations will be protected from the affect of tobacco.
Representatives from WBB Trust, Tobacco Control and Research Cell and Bangladesh Anti-Tobacco Alliance attended the press conference.
