The Bangladesh Bonyo Prani Sheba Foundation in Sreemangal Upazila of Moulvibazar celebrated the birth of an endangered barking deer recently.
The kitten was born on Saturday night to 3-year-old mother. Zoo authorities expect the kitten will become valuable breeders in the future.
Swapan Deb Sajal, Director , Wild Animal Care Foundation, the mother and the kitten are doing fine. We are monitoring the mother and kitten, allowing the family time to bond. After hearing the news, people thronged the zoo. As many were leaning forward to get a better look at the kitten, the mother cautiously sheltered them.
It’s very rewarding that our efforts become success, said zoo director in a statement. The future of their siblings hangs in the balance, so it’s imperative that we do all we can to ensure their survival.
He said, four years back the mother deer rescued by locals from Sreemangal. Last year we recued an injured male barking deer from Lawacherra road area while vehicle hit him. One male and another is female. While adult planned to pair each other.
When Director introduced with this correspondent, though, the barking deer soon began showing affection, grooming and nuzzling each other. He said, this deer gave first birth.
Sawon Pashi, an animal keeper told this correspondent the kitten become more independent.
He said, mother will let the kitten explore only so far before she brings back under her close watch. Her maternal instincts kicked in right away, and she’s proving to be a very adept and confident mother.
These deer are listed as Least Concern on the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) Red List, he added.
