The European Union ambassador in Dhaka Pierre Mayaudon has called for an end to the ongoing violence in Bangladesh.
“We cannot accept these things… these are unacceptable. These sorts of violence must be stopped. Here, the innocent victims are mostly targeted in barbaric manner,” the EU envoy expressed concern after visiting the Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute of Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Tuesday morning.
The EU Ambassador witnessed the overcrowded unit where burn victims have been admitted more than thrice of its normal capacity due to high-flow of burn patients during the blockade.
He also expressed his eagerness to provide EU assistance for the DMCH Burn Unit. “This visit [to burn unit] gave me and my colleagues the crude vision of a terrifying reality,” he said.
Earlier in the morning, a three member representative team of EU in Bangladesh, under the supervision of Pierre Mayaudon went to see the burn unit victims. The other two members of the EU team were Dr. Pierre Lambert and Olivier Brount. They left the burn unit around 10:45 am.
The EU team highly appreciated the medical team who were providing services. They also conveyed his sympathy and solidarity to all the victims. “Its a very committed team of physicians where MSF conducting psychological support programmes simultaneously.”
“The EU stands by the side of the victims, worldwide. Usually, we intervene through our Humanitarian Directorate mostly for natural disaster relief. But we also provide support also in case of man-made disasters,” the EU envoy said.
Director General of Health Department Prof. Din Mohammad Nurul Haque was also present at that time to assist the EU team.
The DG Health said that the EU team members queried the burn victims about their health conditions and had a look at the treatments they are receiving to alleviate their conditions.
“They were much saddened to see the trauma of the burn victims. They also asked the burn victims if they need any assistance at that time. The EU team members were satisfied with the treatment that the burn victims are receiving in DMCH,” the DG added.
