Enacting law to appoint SC judges on card: Anisul

The government is considering enactment of a law on the appointment and qualifications of Supreme Court judges, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister told Parliament on Monday.
The law will be enacted in line with article 95 (2) of the Constitution, Anisul Huq said, replying to a starred question of AKM Mayeedul Islam (Kurigram-3).
“Effective steps will be taken soon to enact the law on the appointment and qualifications of the Supreme Court judges,” he added.
Responding to another starred question from Md Shawkat Chowdhury (Nilphamari-4), Anisul Huq said that according to an October 2014 report, there are 61,877 cases pending with the family courts across the country.
Answering a scripted question from Md Faridul Haque Khan (Jamalpur-2), the Law Minister said a total of 86,699 persons in the country were given legal assistance from the government fund through 64 district legal aid offices from 2009 to September 2014. During that period, as many as 11,611 civil cases and 20,962 criminal cases were disposed of under the government legal aid programme, he added.
