BSS, Dhaka :
Country’s eminent personalities including academics, professionals, artists and human right activists have strongly protested hartal (shutdown) programme during the examinations for Junior School Certificate (JSC) and Junior Dakhil Certificate (JDC).
In a joint statement, they expressed grave concern over the Hartal which gives rise to unrest, clashes, arson and destructive acts.
The hartal call has created panic among the students as well as guardians across the country, they observed. They said although hartal is a democratic right of a political party, the political leaders should consider the examinations of JSC and JDC where around 21 lakh examinees are scheduled to sit for.
They urged political parties not to enforce hartal in view of the public examination and find out an alternative political protest programme instead of hartal. The JSC and JDC examinations of country’s eight education boards are scheduled to begin on November 2. Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), a major rightwing partner of BNP-led 20-party alliance, called nationwide three-day strike on Thursday (Oct 30), Sunday (Nov 2) and Monday (Nov 3).
Jamaate Islami called the hartal protesting ICT (International Crimes Tribunal) verdict that sentenced its leader Motiur Rahman Nizami to death on charges of crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation in 1971.
The signatories to the statement, among others, include:
former Caretaker Government Adviser M Hafizuddin Khan, Dhaka University Emeritus Professor Anisuzzaman, Chairman of Dhaka School of Economics Dr Kazi Khailquzzaman Ahmed, Litterateur Selina Hossain, Vice-Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University Prof AKM Nur-Un-Nabi, Prof Syed Monjurul Islam of Dhaka University, Actor Illias Kanchon, Executive Director of Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB) Dr Iftekharuzzaman, renowned actor Mamunur Rashid, eminent human right activist Khushi Kabir and former Captain of Bangladesh Cricket Team Khaled Masud Pilot.
