Flood situations worsen in N-dists: Embankment collapses cause major damage

The flood situation in the northern districts of the country improved on Wednesday, while it remained unchanged in some parts of the country and deteriorated further in several other parts affecting many people.
According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), the Brahmaputra and the Jamuna river levels are falling while the Ganges and Padma levels are in rising trend. The Ganges may continue to rise in next 48 hours.
Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan, Duty Officer of the FFWC, told The New Nation that the flood situation worsened in several parts due to the heavy rainfalls and onrush of hilly waters. He, however, said that flood situation in Sunamganj, Netrokona and some other areas may improve in next 24 hours
In Sherpur, at least 20 villages of Nalitabari upazila were flooded, as 200-meters of a flood control embankment on the Bhogai River collapsed on Wednesday morning. Several thousand people of those villages, including Marichpuran, Jogania, Khalbhanga, Nalkura, Kharkhariakanda, Gojakura, Banshkanda, Kayarpar and Kapashia under Kalashpar union, have been marooned due to the flashflood.
The roads and seedbeds of the affected villages went under floodwater and fishes of around 50 ponds were washed away. Local people blamed the concerned authorities for the flashflood, as the authorities did not pay proper heed to repair the flood control embankment. They urged the government to take necessary initiative for repairing the embankment immediately.
Chairman of Nalitabari Union Parishad Ashrafuzzaman said that the Khalbhanga point is most dangerous spot of the embankment. The concerned authorities always dump sand bags to stop collapse in the embankment. It the sand bangs are dumped this time, the flood won’t sustain for a long time. He urged the higher authorities concerned to take steps.
Mokhlesur Rahman, a gauge reader of the Water Development Board, said that the portion of the embankment collapsed, as Bhogai River was flowing 58 cm above the danger level due to incessant rain for the last few days.
Besides, seven unions of Jhenigati upazila were inundated due to rise of water level in Moharashi, Someshwari, Jhenai and Kalaghusha rivers.
According to our Sylhet Correspondent, the flood situation remained unchanged in several upazilas of Sylhet division due to incessant rains and on rush of hilly water from the upstream. The flood-hit people are passing their days with miseries, as dwelling houses of many people were damaged and road communications collapsed in several areas.
The flood victims of these areas are facing acute crisis of dry food, pure drinking water and medicines. It is apprehended that the outbreak of different waterborne diseases might hit the flood-affected areas soon water start receding.
