Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder has said that the electoral system of Bangladesh has been netted by a number of complex deseases.
He was speaking in his office at the Election Commission Bhavan, Agargaon on Sunday
“Democracy is in crisis because of the electoral intricacy.. It is not possible for an doctor to cure it In this case, there is no alternative to forming a medical board. It is vital to bring the dying democracy back to normal life.”
In his written speech, the election commissioner further said, “We have to decide whether we want a non-democratic elections or not. On October 7, I visited the by-election to Ward No 73 of Dhaka South City Corporation. Twenty per cent of the votes were cast in EVM voting.
Mahbub Talukdar shared his experience about Chottagram City Corporation’s (CCC) Ward No 16 by-polls held on October 7.
He said it is remarkable that in CCC’s Ward by-polls the winner counselor has lost his security deposit. Obviously it is an unprecedented incident in the world election context.
In my view, I think this has created a peculiar incident in the polls system, he added.
Though the election was ,t the turnout of the voters iwas so low that I was disappointed.”
On the other hand, in the by-election to Ward No 9 of Rajshahi City Corporation, 80 percent votes were cast in EVMs. It is necessary to analyze the reasons why this inequality, he added.
Mahbub Talukder said, “Every effort should be made to increase the number of voters. If the obstacles behind it are not removed, the desired result cannot be obtained.”
He said the controversy over the formation of the next election commission is now at its peak.
“In the last 50 years, no law has been enacted to appoint election commissions as per the constitution. Although it is mandatory, all the ruling governments have violated it. It is undeniable that this law will be enacted if there is confidence in the establishment of establishing voting rights, empowerment of the people and democracy.”
It is impossible to make this law without the consent of all poltical parties for the establishment of multi-party democracy, added Mahbub Talukder.
