Electioneering to wrap up in 625 UPs today

The curtain will fall on electioneering in some 625 Union Parishads (UPs) across the country’s 48 districts on
Thursday midnight, 32 hours before the balloting opens on Saturday.
All types of rallies, processions and showdowns will remain prohibited in the election areas from Thursday midnight, Deputy Secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat Shamsul Alam told UNB on Wednesday.
Nearly 2,700 chairman candidates, including some
 1,500 from 13 political parties and some 1,200 independent contenders, are in the April 23 election race. Like the first two phases of UP elections, at least 25 chairman candidates, all from ruling Awami League, have already been elected uncontested finding no rival candidates against their respective posts in the 3rd phase.
The 25 single chairman candidates are five each in Kushtia and Munshiganj, four in Narayanganj, two each in Shariatpur, Comilla and Laxmipur, one each in Jamalpur, Jhenidah, Rajbari, Noakhali and Khagrachhari.
