Staff Reporter :
The days of regime change by election are no more. There are two ways for a government to remain in power. One is people’s power and another is power of gun. The present government has given up depending on the people’s power of election, said Barrister Mainul Hosein on Independent Television Tuesday night.
Barrister Hosein in the midst of a heated argument has stuck to the conclusion that a government has to depend either on people’s power or the power of gun as expressed through police power. The present government is vulnerable and not strong for not having the power of the people as its strength. Police power does not make a government strong. Those who are helping the government to remain in power also know this government is not elected by the people.
He finally threw a challenge that it is most unrealistic to think that under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina or Begum Khaleda Zia democracy will have a chance to succeed. For the last forty years they had failed to show their faith and understanding of democracy. On 5th January two years ago the election politics disappeared for holding power through the people’s election.
Barrister Hosein expressed his deep anxiety that in such a situation where the government has to depend on police power and not on election power violence and terrorism will spread. As a nation we are rushing towards leaderless violence. The government is not even aware that no section of the government is working. The life of the ordinary people is miserable and insecure.
Barrister Hosein finds it too dangerous that plain clothes officials are picking up people. His worry is that such practice will be helpful for miscreants. The government officials must behave like the government officials.
He asserted that democracy has been hindered all along but on fifth January two years ago the crisis for democracy reached a turning point for grabbing power without election leaving no room for change of government through election.
The change of party leadership makes a party democratic but we have allowed family leadership to continue. In a parliamentary democracy everywhere a defeated prime minister has to go first but in our country none moves out, said Barrister Hosein.
