Ansar-Al-Islam, Bangladesh chapter of al-Qaeda in the Indian Sub-Continent, on Monday in separate letters issued death threat to eight noted personalities including State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam.
The others personalities, who also received death threat are-renowned fiction writer and Rajshahi University teacher Hasan Azizul Haq, former Rajshahi City Corporation mayor Khairuzzaman Liton, Rajshahi University Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Mizanuddin and Rajshahi local newspaper Daily Sunshine Managing Editor Younus Ali. Apart from them, Deputy Inspector General (Rajshahi Range) Iqbal Bahar, former Chairman of Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Rajshahi, Abul Hayat and Awami League Rajshahi City unit General Secretary Dablu Sarker were issued death threat.
The outlawed group issued the death threat through separate letters sent to the eminent personalities addresses by post.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam’s special assistant Sirajul Islam confirmed the threat but claimed that the members of Ansar Al Islam have not issued the threat.
In the letter the name of Mufti Abdullah Ashraf has been mentioned as chief of the organisation while Professor Habibur Rahman of Rajshahi College as chief of Rajshahi zone.
Besides, in the letter the name of Professor Abu Bakar Siddique has been mentioned as a sender.
Earlier on November 10 last, Prof Emeritus of Dhaka University Dr Anisuzzaman received a death threat from an unknown number over his mobile phone.
Besides, on June 16, the outlawed Islamic outfit ‘Ansarullah Bangla Team’ issued death threat to 25 renowned personalities, including Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu and Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique.
Those received the death threat also include eminent historian Prof Dr Syed Anwar Hussain, Prof Dr Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, cultural personalities Nasiruddin Yusuf Bachchu and Ramendra Majumder, Ekatturer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee President Shahriar Kabir, Bhorer Kagoj editor Shyamol Dutta, journalists Munni Shaha, Nobonita Chowdhury, Abed Khan, Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul, Ganajagaran Mancha spokesperson Dr Imran H Sarkar, BCL general secretary Siddique Nazmul Alam and Chhatra Moitree president Bappa Dipto Basu.
Earlier on May 21 this year, the same outfit issued death threat to 10 personalities, including the DU VC, Prime Ministers’ adviser HT Imam and Zafar Iqbal.
