Eid shopping gets momentum in Khulna City

With only 10 days left of the holy Eid-ul-Fitr, the largest religious festival of the Muslims, shopping has gained momentum with huge rush in the markets of the industrial city.
The buyers are crowding in the city markets here to buy new clothes, cosmetics, shoes and other items for their families with festive mood after two years of covid-19 pandemic.
All the city markets are seen busy selling their Eid items as rush of the customers in city’s different shopping centers, which begin in the morning and continue till midnight.
While visiting city’s Shopping complex, Nixon market, Khwaza Khanjahan Ali Market, Clay Road, Boro Bazar, Sonadanga shopping Centre and KDA New market today, this reporter found huge crowds of buyers.
Talking to BSS, most of the sales clerks said that the sales have reached its peak after 15 Ramadan compared with last two years. Shoppers said that the prices of all clothes were increased by 15 to 20 percent compared to last year.
‘This year the sales after Ramadan 15 has increased up to one lakh a day from Taka 20,000 to Taka 25,000 per day,’ said Abul Hasan, owner of Bismillah Enterprise of Khulna Shopping Complex.
Marshal Tito, owner of Pabna Bipony Bitan of the market told to BSS that this year ‘Sarara’ and ‘Garara’ dresses are prime demands to young women. This dresses are purchasing from Taka 3500 to 5,500. Maximum women customers are purchasing ‘net Saree’, an handicraft embroidery Jorjet type thin saree, of Taka 5,000 to Taka10,000. Besides, Jorjet, Tangail, Moslin, Silk, Katan and Tissue type sarees are also selling, he said.
According to the importers and wholesalers, this year’s most important development centering the Eid shopping ceremony was pushing of Indian and Chinese products – which are traditionally dominating in Bangladesh’s Eid market into backward point due to heavy onrush of Taiwan and Thailand-made readymade garments, three pieces for young women, shoes, cosmetics, kid’s item and other fashion commodities.
Popular Indian three pieces and sarees are being sold at prices ranging from Taka 4,500 to Taka 25000 and local sarees are also in very demand, said Alif Islam, Joint Secretary of KDA New Market Owners Association and proprietor of Aponjona, a three pieces and saree shop.
Silk Katan and Lehenga are being sold in higher prices ranging from TK 7,500 to TK 35,000.Roadside footpath shops and small shops are found crowded than the big shopping malls.
Meanwhile, a large number of makeshift shops have sprung up on the pavements of the city on Eid-ul-Fitr.
Prices of different varieties of clothes, particularly cotton, tissue, silk and synthetic have registered a sharp rise although the shops are almost full of a variety of garments.
