BSS, Rangpur :
As a result of improvement in economic conditions after driving away ‘monga’, the common people are preparing to celebrate the Eid-ul-Fitr festivity in the ‘poverty-prone’ areas of Rangpur region.
“The common people are busy in purchasing clothes and vermicelli to celebrate the Eid-ul-Fitr festivity in place of fighting against poverty even a decade ago,” said Director (Development Programme) of RDRS Bangladesh Monjusree Saha.
Monjusree, a development specialist, said the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has successfully combated the seasonal joblessness situation of ‘monga’ during the past nine years on way to build a middle income nation by 2021.
Executive Director of Rangpur-based research organisation ‘Northbengal Institute of Development Studies’ Dr Syed Samsuzzaman said living standard of the poor has improved because of their engagements with many income generating activities.
“An Eid fever has griped the ‘poverty-prone areas now following massive government interventions in improving economic conditions of the poorer section people freeing them from the clutches of ‘monga’, an extreme poverty-like situation,” he said.
Chairman of Nohali union under Gangachara upazila Abul Kalam Azad Titul said the poor are leading normal life without experiencing any bite of ‘monga’ with a dream of brighter future for their children.
“Overcoming miseries of ‘monga’ through improving economic conditions, the poor are purchasing Eid clothes and other goods at Gangachara town and Rangpur city as well for their family members to celebrate the Eid-ul-Fitr festivity,” Titul said.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer of Rangpur Faridul Haque said the poor are now ready to celebrate the Eid-ul-Fitr after driving away ‘monga’ permanently following successful implementation of the government’s social safety net programmes.
“Easy-term loans, allowances, training for unemployed youths for income generations being provided by different government departments and development partners played important roles in improving economic condition of the poor,” he added Chilmari upazila chairman Shawkat Ali Sarker, Bir Bikram, said the poor have changed fortune through small-scale enterprises, cottage industries, sewing garments, waving, homestead farming, pisciculture, rearing poultry birds, animals and other ventures.
