Thousands of people have started leaving the city to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha with dear and near ones at their hometowns and villages.
Though the Eid exodus was started on Saturday, it reached peak on Monday as thousands of residents exit the city by various means of transportation, a day before the Eid holiday begins from Tuesday to Thursday.
The city bus, launch terminals and Railway stations witnessed more rush of commuters yesterday.
Heavy rush was seen at some bus terminals and city’s exit and entry point.
Some passengers made usual complaints of overcharging by the transporters and some were angry on unavailability of seats.
The exodus will complete on moon night, a days before Eid, which is expected to be celebrated on Wednesday.
Kamalapur Railway Station was packed with passengers, as most families with children and luggage prefer trains for long travelling. The Bangladesh Railways is operating special trains to facilitate passengers from different city stations to cater heavy rush of commuters. The booking on special trains has already completed.
However, sufferings of train passengers mounted on yesterday following a terrible schedule disruption between Dhaka and other destinations.
An official at the Kamalapur Railway Station said that some trains scheduled to arrive on early hours could not make it while those are scheduled to leave Monday morning are delayed for an ‘indefinite time’.
According to some estimates, more than six million people leave Dhaka twice in a year on Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Azha.
The government has announced three days Eid holiday (from Tuesday to Thursday) but majority of the government employees will enjoy five days holidays as it coincided with two more weekly holidays (Friday and Saturday).
