Eid cattle markets must be managed properly

A REPORT in The New Nation on Wednesday said the two city corporations are working at this moment how to deal with the cattle markets during the Eid-Ul-Azha. Security to the markets and cleaning the city streets from animal waste during the Eid festival is the biggest challenge on this occasion. The Eid festival is approaching closer and for at least one week prior to the event, traders bring cattle herds in the city when rule of law almost breaks down in the streets making the city dirty. Cattle markets all over the country run throughout nights on this occasion and traders and buyers remain exposed to cheating and even live on the brink of safety. In the city particularly during the festival slaughtering of animals in road sides creates an ugly scene and throwing of animal waste in public places spreads stink in the air that requires quick cleaning.
As per news report Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has decided to limit the leasing of the cattle markets at certain locations and deny holding of temporary markets near hospitals, schools, residential areas and public places. Even though such markets were held in those places in the past, DNCC would not allow it this time taking into consideration disturbances to public life. However, the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) is gang to allow the cattle markets to function where they take place every year.
Meanwhile, the leasing of the cattle markets is overheating the situation as thugs and criminals are trying to control the markets and dominate traders under the cover of ruling party men who are already organized in syndicates and flexing muscle to get the lease. Chief Estate Officer of the Dhaka South City Corporation has reportedly hoped that the tender process would be completed peacefully.
The government has to show its ability to manage things appropriately.
