Speakers at a programme in Sylhet on Saturday emphasised on holding a free, fair and neutral election in a peaceful environment, to strengthen democratic practice and establish good government in the country.
Stating that citizens are the main source of power of a democratic country, they said that electing people’s representatives in proper way is necessary to ensure development of the country.
They made the statement while addressing a rally organised by Sushasoner Janno Nagrik, a citizen platform, in front of the Central Shaheed Minar in Sylhet city in the afternoon.
The citizen platform held the programme to press home their demand for modification of the People Representative Law and holding a free and fair election.
Speakers at the rally also made some recommendations to hold credible elections. Their recommendations include recruiting constituency-based returning officers, empowering them with necessary power, and using electronic voting machine in the next general elections.
Sujon district unit president Faruk Mahmud Chowdhury chaired the rally, which was addressed, among others, by National Woman Lawyers’ Association divisional committee convener Syeda Shirin Akter, Sylhet Zilla Press Club general secretary Shah Didar Alam Noble, senior journalists Iqbal Siddiquee, Ikramul Kabir and Muhith Chowdhury, lawyer Nilendu Dev, Sujon district unit secretary Shah Shaheda Akter and Acid Santras Nirmul Committee general secretary Jurej Abdullah Gulzar.
