Effective community based disaster management underscored

Effective community-based early preparedness with efficient emergency response management system could reduce loss of lives and property during natural disasters, speakers at an orientation workshop said on Tuesday.
Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) and ‘Pollishree’, an NGO, jointly organised the workshop on ‘Enhancing Inclusive Disaster Resilience in Bangladesh’ at the hall room of Rangpur Technical School in the city.
The Oxfam GB extended financial assistances in arranging the orientation workshop to institutionalize the Community-based Disaster Management Preparedness Model involving the local population at the ward levels in the city. With City Councilor Jahangir Alam Tota (Ward No-30) in the chair, Deputy Managing Director of Rangpur Group (RG) Ashraful Al-Amin attended the orientation workshop as the chief guest.
Social workers Mohammad Abdul Jalil and Malek Niaz Arzoo addressed the occasion as special guests while Advocacy and Communication Officer of “Pollishree’ Rezaul Karim Reza moderated the workshop.
Project Officer of ‘Pollishree’ Shahanaz Parveen elaborately narrated the goals and objectives of the workshop participated by leaders of the community-based organisations, public representatives, teachers, students,freedom fighters, Imams and local elite.
Taking part in the open discussion, the speakers narrated about the
natural disasters like earthquake, statistics with loss of human lives and properties and suggested way-outs for reducing disaster risks in the disaster-prone areas.
They stressed for coordinated efforts of the GO-NGOs, public
representatives and community leaders in creating awareness and disseminating necessary knowledge among the common people to reduce potential losses during earthquake and other natural disasters.
The chief guest put maximum emphasis on creating awareness, early preparedness and efficient emergency response management system through effective dissemination of information among common people to minimize the damages caused by natural disasters.
He suggested for demonstrating disaster management activities at community levels and innovating need-based local mechanisms in urban and rural areas involving the community people.
Repression, torture free society for women stressed : Speakers at a discussion here have stressed for building a peaceful society free from repression, torture and violence against women anywhere and in any form for accelerating national development.
They put special emphasis on launching vigorous social movement, involving the common people, against social erosion, ‘fatwa’, unhealthy culture, drug abuse, gambling, repression, rape and violence against women and human trafficking.
They also demanded for bringing about an end to ill culture and pornography, violence against women, rape, gang rape and murder after rape, acid attack, sexual harassment and fundamentalism as the womenfolk are facing risks everywhere in the society.
Rangpur district unit of Bangladesh Narimukti Kendra (BNK) organised the discussion at BSD (Marxist) Office in the city in observance of its second founding anniversary on Monday afternoon.
With General Secretary of district unit of BNK Nazmun Nahar Lipi in the chair, district unit leader of BSD (Marxist) Polash Kanti Nag attended and addressed the discussion as the chief guest.
President of Rangpur district unit of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front Ahsanul Arefin Titu, Organisers of the district unit of BNK Nandini Das and Rina Akhter addressed as the special guests.
