The Election Commission has called a meeting for today to find ways to reform the Representation of the People Order amid discussion on the issues related to the electronic voting machines.
“There were two issues for the meeting. The RPO amendment and the preparation to arrange FEMBoSA [Forum of the Election Management Bodies of South Asia] summit to be held this year in Dhaka,” Md Shah Alam,
senior assistant secretary of the EC, told bdnews24.com.
The move for amending RPO comes months before the 11th parliamentary elections, though the EC held dialogues with stakeholders in July last year about the RPO amendment.
Earlier this year, EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said there will be no amendment to the RPO before the next parliamentary elections.
However, Election Commissioner Kabita Khanam said last week that the Commission was working to amend the RPO by including the use of EVMs in the next parliamentary polls.
“There were two commission meetings on the RPO amendment. Some additional corrections and other suggestions were made. Now the commission is working on those.”
Speaking on the preparation for the parliamentary elections, Khanam said: “Trained people are needed to operate the EVMs. There is a matter of confidence too. Once the commission decides to include the use of the EVM in the RPO, We’ll move ahead accordingly.”
The BNP, which boycotted the 10th parliamentary elections, has objection to the use of EVMs.
