Road Transport and Bridges Minister and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Monday said that the Election Commission should carry out an investigation behind the Sunday’s clash during the electioneering of BNP’s DSCC mayor candidate Ishraque Hossain at Gopibagh in the capital.
“Law enforcers are now under the EC. So, it can direct them to take action in this regard through a proper investigation,” he said while addressing journalists at his ministry on current issues.
“BNP accused AL for the clash to diplomats, but the video footage of the incident shows otherwise. The footage shows the candidate himself was kicking the door of the opponent’s office room. So, it has to investigate,” Quader said.
Replying to a query about Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar’s allegation that there is no level-playing field within the EC, Quader said it is their internal matter.
“An Election Commissioner can express different views over an issue but I cannot support the way the commissioner is making EC’s internal issues public. I have heard of this kind of allegation, this is absurd and odd,” he said.
Obaidul Quader said, “The BNP and Mahbub Talukder are reacting the same way, that it feels like the election commissioner is taking a stance for a particular party.”
