The BNP on Tuesday said that the Election Commission appears reluctant to hold fair election in order to help the government.
“The EC fixed December 30 as date of voting amid the absence of foreign election observers and diplomats due to Christmas and New Year’s day. It is nothing but to help the government to rig vote,” said the party Senior Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi in a press briefing in its Nayapaltan office.
He said, the EC knew it that foreign observers
cannot stay here and monitor the polls. The foreign observers, ambassadors, high commissioners and officials of different countries would be on leave on the occasion of Christmas and New Year celebration.
The BNP leader asked the EC to defer the election schedule by a month.
Rizvi also criticised the EC for its decision on using Electronic Voting Machines EVM in around 100 constituencies.
He said, “The EVM use is part of a master plan of vote rigging.” He urged the EC to retreat from its decision of using the EVMs for the sake of holding acceptable polls. He demanded party cheif Khaleda Zia’s unconditional release.
Rizvi said, law enforcers continue to arrest their party leaders and activists filing fictitious cases and raiding their houses, as the EC failed to ensure a minimum election atmosphere.
The press briefing was held amid the party’s second day of selling nomination papers to the aspirant candidates at the Nayapaltan central office.
The party office was teeming with supporters and activists on the occasion. Thousands of crowds waited in front of party office with their leaders with banners and festoons in a festive atmosphere.
Like the previous day, huge BNP nomination seekers from across the country started gathering in front of the party office since early morning along with their thousands of supporters to collect nomination papers.
The party started the sale of the nomination papers at 10:00am on the day.
Party office sources said, the aspirants can collect the nomination forms until November 16 as the deadline has been extended by two more days.
