The Election Commission (EC) is planning to hold elections to three more city corporations in Sylhet, Rajshahi and Barisal in July.
The schedule of these elections may be announced before the Eid-ul-Fitr, and the polls may be held either on July 24 or July 25.
According to EC sources, the Commission is going to hold its 30th meeting today (May 29) to determine the next course of action regarding the elections of those three city corporations.
In addition, it will also discuss some other issues like municipality polls, upazila parishad polls, use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the Gazipur civic polls and other city corporation elections, and simplification of providing NID services at the field level.
On May 16, the EC issued an order to prepare the electoral roll and polling centres of the three city polls. It has also plans to hold the by-elections of Kurigram-3 on the same date with the city corporation polls. The Kurigram-3 constituency fell vacant after the death of Jatiya Party lawmaker AKM Maidul Islam on May 10.
EC sources said, the schedule of an election is announced 40-45 days before actual polling. Accordingly, the commission has to announce the schedule before the Eid-ul-Fitr vacation.
Earlier, Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda said they planned to hold all the city corporation elections before the parliamentary polls, which is scheduled to be held by end of this year or beginning of next year.
As per the Local Government (City Corporation) law, the civic polls have to be held within 180 days of the expiry of the five-year term of city corporations.
According to the LGRD Ministry, the tenure of Rajshahi City Corporation will end on October 5, Barishal City Corporation on October 23 and Sylhet City Corporation on October 8. The last civic polls in Rajshahi, Barishal and Sylhet were held on June 15, 2013.
Recently, the EC completed the Khulna city polls on May 15. Though the Gazipur city polls were supposed to be held on the same date, it was delayed due to legal complications. When the legal tangle was over, the EC fixed the date of holding the city polls on June 26.
