The speakers in a seminar on Tuesday said that the atmosphere so far was suggesting making the upcoming polls debatable.
It is because the Election Commission is not functioning properly. The administration is biased and law enforcers are harassing, especially political leaders and workers, they said.
The seminar was arranged by Centre for Governance Studies on “Can People Vote Freely?” It was held in the city’s BIISS auditorium where Badiul Alam Majumder, Zafrullah Chowdhury, Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud and Brigadier General M Sakhawat Hossain were, among others, present.
“A free, fair and acceptable election atmosphere is largely absent. The Election Commission is still not trustworthy and if they cannot work, the election can be controversial and voters will be deprived,” said BadiulAlam Majumder, Secretary of Sujan.
Meanwhile, Zafrullah Chowdhury, founder of Gonoshasthya Kendra, said “People of the country want to vote, but the government is trying to foil the election.”
Shakhawat Hossain, a former Election Commissioner, also urged opposition
parties not to boycott election at any cost.
The Election Commission earlier in November revised polls schedule of the 11th general election to December 30.
December 9, the last date for nomination withdrawal, the commission allotted polls symbols to the political parties.
